The dedolight Lightstream Flag system is designed to prevent excess light from passing beyond a reflector and then bouncing back to create unwanted effects within a scene.

The dedolight Flags are available in square or round shapes with a mounting point located central to a hole within the flag, This is where the reflector attaches. The flags are available in 5 different sizes to accommodate different size reflectors: 22 inches, 32 inches, 42 inches, 52 inches, 62 inches.

It is also possible to mount several flags together. Square flags can be mounted to a single stand, enabling 4 or 5 reflectors to be mounted to attachable arms. All flags, single, round or multiple squares use the one and only stand – the same one that holds the reflector. All other flag systems need extra stands and with lighting setups involving multiple reflectors, you may wind up with a forest of stands.
The idea of the dedolight Flag system is simple - to prevent excess light aimed at the reflector/s from creating further unwanted results - however, the dedolight Lightsteam Flag system is useful beyond this.

Using the different cover surfaces enables different effects to be used. Black will absorb light, whereas the gold, silver or white surfaces covering the flag will result in a larger reflective surface.

The large reflective surface is useful for creating soft light while the choice of reflector located central to the flag will act as a hard light. Choosing different reflectors in the centre, you create a focusing effect in four steps, maintaining the large surrounding soft light surface.

The distance of flag + reflector to subject will influence the result. While the flag itself covered in white, silver or gold will be a soft light when close to the subject, this becomes a harder light when moved further away

In the words of cinematographer Dedo Weigert, inventor of the dedolight system:

“Hard and soft light regarding the formation of shadow and light and the transitions between shadow and light is only dependent on the size of the area that emits light or reflects light in relation to the distance to the lit object or talent.”

Furthermore, a dedolight Eflect reflector can be mounted central to the flag, therefore creating patterned effects as part of the reflected light result.

This way of working represents a major step forward and achieves the dream of many photographers and cinematographers - which is to be able to work with soft light and hard light simultaneously, with the light deriving from a single source.

Controlling the ratio of hard light to soft light is the skill of the cinematographer; the dedolight Lightstream Flag system offers the tools to control and direct the light as needed. This crosses between hard and soft light, adding more versatility to the installation of the reflectors, clearing the set from unnecessary lighting paraphernalia while still enabling control over the soft/hard characters of the lighting.
